Symptoms & Diagnosis

Recognizing a Meniscus Tear

The meniscus is a piece of cartilage in your knee that cushions and stabilizes the joint. A tear can occur during sports, accidents, or from degeneration over time.

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain – Especially when twisting or rotating the knee
  • Swelling – Often developing within 24-48 hours of injury
  • Stiffness – Difficulty fully bending or straightening the knee
  • Catching or Locking – The knee may feel like it's catching during movement
  • Weakness – Feeling like the knee may give out

Treatment Options

Meniscus Tear Treatment Approaches

Treatment depends on the type, size, and location of the tear, as well as your age and activity level.

Non-Surgical Treatment

For smaller tears in areas with good blood supply, conservative treatment may be effective:

  • RICE Method – Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation
  • Physical Therapy – Strengthening surrounding muscles
  • Anti-inflammatory Medications – Reducing pain and swelling
  • Activity Modification – Avoiding movements that aggravate the tear

Surgical Treatment

When conservative treatment fails or for larger tears, surgery may be recommended:

  • Meniscus Repair – Suturing the tear to preserve meniscus tissue
  • Partial Meniscectomy – Removing the damaged portion
  • Arthroscopic Surgery – Minimally invasive with faster recovery
  • Meniscus Transplant – For young patients with extensive damage
